Tree Trimming and Pruning details

Crown Weight Against A Shallow Plate

Somewhere under every tree on this soil there is a wide, flat root system spreading through half a metre of sand above clay it cannot penetrate.

The crown is the lever acting on that. So the first question is not what shape you want; it is how much weight is up there and how far out it sits.

A measured reduction — ten to fifteen per cent, weighted to the longest limbs — takes a meaningful share of the leverage out. A forty per cent hack takes the tree's reserves out instead and gets three years of weak regrowth back in exchange.

The proportion belongs on the quote. If nobody will write one down, they are pricing the invoice and not the cut.

Street Trees Grow Sideways

Along Garden Avenue and the roads off it, the trees have spent their lives reaching toward the open light above the pavement and thinning on the shaded side.

What you end up with is a crown that has more weight on one side than the other, standing directly over traffic. The right treatment there is not an even reduction all round — it is weighted deliberately toward the overhanging side.

Establish first whether the tree is yours or the municipality's. On these streets it is often not obvious, and it is cheaper to find out before somebody quotes than after somebody cuts.

Oak Gets Winter

Ontario has oak wilt. Beetles deliver it to open wounds while a tree is growing, and dormant-season cutting sidesteps the whole problem.

So oaks here get their tree trimming and pruning with the leaves off. That is why a May enquiry about an oak gets answered with a date in December.

A storm-damaged oak in July is a different matter and gets attended to — nothing hanging over a driveway is going to hold on until November. Call that damage limitation, not scheduled work.

Cuts, Collars And Wet Ground

The sealing tissue sits in a collar where limb meets stem. Leave that collar intact and the wound closes over; cut into it and nothing closes.

On ground that stays wet, decay fungi are more at home than they are on a dry site, so a poor cut here has more company than a poor cut on the sand plain south of the county.

Hence a restrained approach to tree trimming and pruning: cuts made in the right place, volumes kept down, and a further visit some years on instead of doing everything in one go.

Young Trees And New Planting

Fixing a codominant stem on a five-year-old tree is ten minutes. Fixing it on a thirty-year-old tree is a cabling job. Fixing it on a sixty-year-old tree is usually a removal.

Included bark in a fork, two competing leaders, a branch growing back into the crown — all of it is cheap now and expensive later.

Where new stock has replaced a felled tree, begin the tree trimming and pruning while a pair of hands and a small saw can still shape it.

Dead Branch Removal

Dead branch removal is collecting what the tree has already written off, before it comes down on its own schedule. On streets like these it is the most common job we do and the easiest to price.

Tree Removal

Ring here about taking a tree down and you will usually be told it wants cutting, not felling. Occasionally that is not the answer, and dressing it up costs money later.

Put A Number On It

Describe the tree's behaviour, name what is beneath the crown, and mention the bank if it comes into it. A climber comes out and the scope that returns spells out brush, cordwood and exclusions.
