This is not something a camera can settle. Photograph a lean, a parted fork or a raised plate and you get a picture of nothing at all. Neither the visit nor the written scope is charged for.
The soils under Cainsville — the Bookton and Berrien series — are a sand veneer of forty to a hundred centimetres lying on clay.
That is a specific and important arrangement. Rain moves down through the sand quickly and then stops at the clay, which means a perched water table sitting close to the surface for much of the year. Roots do not go through the clay. They spread sideways in the sand instead.
The result is a wide, shallow plate rather than a deep anchor. A tree grown like that stands perfectly well until the day the sand is saturated and the wind is in the wrong quarter, and then it goes over entire — plate, root ball and all — rather than snapping off partway up.
No tree trimming changes the soil. What tree trimming can do is shorten the lever arm the wind gets to work with, and that is why reduction gets specified here more often than it would on deeper ground.
The County identifies a flood reach running from Paris down through Onondaga, and Cainsville is inside it. Down at The Oxbow the mapped soil is simply Alluvium, with an inundation limitation on it.
Two things follow. Saturated ground holds a root plate far less firmly than dry ground, so the windthrow risk here is seasonal rather than constant — highest in spring and after a long wet spell, which is exactly when the wind tends to arrive.
And for tree trimming purposes the bank itself is not stable ground. A tree leaning out over the water with soil eroding beneath it is a tree removal decision that gets more expensive and more awkward every year it is deferred, because eventually neither a truck nor a chipper can get near it.
This is the one thing about Cainsville that nobody tells you until it matters.
The village straddles the municipal boundary. Roughly half is City of Brantford and half is County of Brant, the result of annexations carried out in stages through the last century. The two run different tree by-laws.
So the rules that apply to a tree depend on which side of a line it happens to stand on, and that line does not follow anything obvious on the ground. A neighbour's experience is not a reliable guide to your own permit position.

Everything here falls into one of three categories, and each behaves differently.
Street trees are planted in a strip, lean toward the road for the light, and drop what they drop where there is traffic. Clearance and deadwood are the standing tree trimming brief.
Yard trees are single specimens, usually planted when the house went up, and they have grown with nothing to shelter them. Open-grown trees fork low, and low forks with included bark are the fault tree cabling and bracing exists for.
Riparian trees along the bank are the ones nobody books tree trimming for until one comes down. Silver maple, willow, and things that grew fast in wet ground — soft-wooded, prone to shedding limbs, and standing on soil the water is quietly taking away.
The County has designated the Premier Employment Hub east of here, with something like 7,600 jobs planned by 2051, and water and wastewater construction scheduled through 2027 to 2029.
That matters for one practical reason. Trenching near a tree severs roots on one side, and a tree with its roots cut on one side and a shallow plate to begin with is a tree whose anchorage has been altered without anybody assessing it.
If work of that kind is coming past your property, get a tree trimming assessment done before it starts rather than after. There is a difference between a tree that failed and a tree that was made to fail, and the difference is often documentation.
Bunnell's Landing sat on this stretch of the Grand, and this was one of the places an early Black community took root in the county — Cayuga Heights and the ground around it carry that history.
None of which changes a tree trimming quote. It does explain why some of the trees we do tree trimming on are older than the housing around them, and why a few of them are worth more consideration than a developer's schedule allows.
Trees of that age get conservative tree trimming: deadwood out, a defect eased, clearance restored, and no tree trimming beyond that.

It does not put a root plate back once it has moved. Where the earth upwind of the stem has cracked or lifted, the anchorage is already gone, and at that point it is a tree removal being discussed.

And no amount of tree trimming holds a bank up. If the soil is going, the tree is going with it, and the only question is whether it comes out while the ground can still take a machine.

A void running through a good part of the trunk, or fungus fruiting at ground level. Neither is a dead branch removal case.
A fork that has split rather than one that looks suspect.
A lean that appeared this year, particularly with disturbed ground on the high side or a bank below.
Top a tree. That is not tree trimming and it never will be.
Touch a conductor. No tree trimming happens there until the utility releases it.
Price from a photograph. Photographs conceal a lean, flatten a slope and reveal nothing about what stands below.

Because the sand is only forty to a hundred centimetres deep over clay, so roots spread sideways instead of going down. That produces a wide shallow plate, and a wide shallow plate in saturated ground lets go of the whole tree at once.

Fewer every year, which is the honest answer. While a truck and a chipper can still reach it, the tree trimming is ordinary. Once the bank has taken enough soil away, it becomes a crane job or a rope job and the price changes accordingly.
