For the first half-metre, stump grinding and removal here is easy going. The wheel cuts sand and the sand falls away.
Below that is clay, and clay does not fall away from a stump grinding and removal wheel. On a large stump where the grinding has to go deeper, or where the surface roots have to be chased out sideways, the machine ends up working the heavier material and the job takes longer.
Which of those yours is depends on the diameter and on how deep you actually need it. Both are routine. They just cost differently, and the quote makes clear which one you are being charged for.
Depth belongs on the quote and not on the doorstep.
Turf wants 150 to 200 mm below grade. Grass roots stay near the surface, so grindings, soil, seed and it is done.
A border wants depth a root ball actually fits into, not a dressing of soil over packed chip.
Under slabs, under a shed, or along a fence run, go deeper still — and expect the shallow roots to be chased out sideways as well.
Simply want to stop catching the mower on it? Less depth, less money — mention it and the quote reflects it.
This is worth knowing here specifically.
The ground around a stump hole on sand over clay does not drain once you are down near the clay. Which means any dip left behind as the chip drops sits full of water all winter instead of draining, and on a lawn that becomes a soft patch that never quite recovers.
The answer is to overfill deliberately and expect to top it up once during the first year, rather than raking it level on the day and hoping.
Grindings hold almost no water and the sand above the clay holds not much more in August, while the same ground is saturated in April. That is an awkward combination for a young tree and it narrows the species list.
Plant in autumn. Water deliberately through two summers. And keep new planting out of fresh grindings — as they break down they pull nitrogen out of the surrounding soil, and anything in there stands still for a couple of seasons.
The route of anything buried. A cutting wheel meets pipe and cable at full speed, and services on these lots are not reliably where the drawings put them.
Getting in. One machine passes through a garden gate; the other will not, and it is a great deal quicker. On a bank or a narrow side passage, access decides which comes.
Wire or stone in it. Old boundary stumps have often closed over fencing, and hitting it writes off the teeth and ends the visit.
